Topic 1: Integers and Rational Numbers

In this unit, students will learn all about rational numbers, especially integers. We review addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, but we add in a new twist: positive AND negative numbers!

We build upon what students learned last year. For example, in 6th grade, students were introduced to negative numbers as the opposite of a positive number. For example, -6 is the opposite of 6. Students also learned how to assign an integer to a phrases such as “lost 6,” “gained 12,” rose 14,” and “dropped 10.”

In 7th grade, these fundamentals are built upon so students can solve problems like “I owe you 9 cookies and give you 2 cookies. How many cookies do I have or how many cookies do I still owe you?”

All cookies aside, this unit is essential to students’ success with money after high school. Understanding debts as negative numbers and credits as positive numbers, knowing how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide those numbers, and determining if the answer is positive or negative makes our students become resourceful and informed money managers.

Here are some resources you can use to help your student practice these skills so they become fluent in this topic!
