Computer Concepts

Computer Concepts is a practical course meant to help students build proficiency in using the Microsoft Office suites for school, business, and personal uses.  The course will also include online EverFi curriculum modules focusing on digital literacy and safety.

August and September Highlights:  We kicked off the year with a look at digital literacy and how computers are a part of every aspect of our modern lives.  We've begun working on basic Microsoft Office Word projects to build work processing skills.  The class also completed a "Good Turn Tuesday" project by designing, printing, and creating greeting cards that were sent to senior citizens in the Pearl City area.  We hope to continue this project throughout the year as a way to connect  to our community!

October Highlights:  Our practical study of Microsoft Word has expanded to projects related to completing research papers, creating letterheads, and producing simple business letters.  The emphasis is on learning skills which can be used in personal and business settings.  The class appreciated receiving thank you cards from many of the senior citizens who received cards through our Good Turn Tuesday project!

November Highlights:  Microsoft PowerPoint is the focus of our new unit of study in Computer Concepts.  Class members have been creating various PowerPoint projects of increasing difficulty and learning how to be creative in delivering a message through this visual means.  We've added senior citizens from First United Methodist Church in Pearl City to our "Good Turn Tuesday" card list and created Thanksgiving cards for them.

December Highlights:  Each student created a major PowerPoint project highlighting a country of his or her choosing.  They then presented the PowerPoint to the class.  Our PowerPoint travels took us to Russia, Turks and Caicos, and all points in between!  One student who focused on New Zealand even researched and performed a Maori tribal dance as part of his presentation!  Class members also used Publisher to create Christmas cards for elderly residents of the community.

January Highlights:  The class began the Microsoft Excel unit as we returned from Christmas break.  Class members took a census of class pets and then created a simple "worksheet" to present their findings.  The creation of graphics such as bar graphs and pie charts  finished up that project.  Class members are learning how to use functions to let the worksheet do the math computations easily.
